Poodle
Poodles origin dates back to the ancient family of water dogs. South of Europe is recorded as a place of origin of this breed. Since middle ages the breed is spread throughout Europe. Standard medium sized poodle was used as a retriever, but also as a circus dog, therefore circus groups helped spread the breed. Small sized types of poodles were developed from the medium sized poodle, breeding and mixing with other breeds.
It is considered to be either Germany or Russia the actual country of origin of the breed, although France was most responsible for popularizing the breed, therefore poodle is now widely known as the national dog of France. In France, the poodle is known as 'caniche' – derived from the French word for duck. The name "poodle" is derived from the German word "Pudel" which means to splash in the water. Besides being used as a hunting breed of dog and as a water retriever, poodles are proved to be useful in war, circuses, and even as a dog to find truffles. Toy poodle was popular dog as the court at the time of Louis XVI.
Hair that does not let water to penetrate to the skin made swimming a little harder so the hunters cut the hair on poodles’ back legs.
Today the poodle is one of the most popular breeds in the world.
Poodles are of a very friendly nature, always eager to please its owner. Very intelligent and adaptable so they are easy and quick learners. This dog is loyal and active, enjoying games and likes to show various skills (with the ball, agility…).
There are 4 types of poodle: large sized, standard, miniature and toy, whose standards do not differ except in terms of height. Poodle is a compact and muscular dog breed, has distinctive proud posture and lively, unrestrained movement. The head is long and of distinct lines. The eyes are dark and almond-shaped, the ears are long, set on low and falling down his cheeks. Tail is usually docked, but it can be left in its natural length.
Characteristic of a poodle is, of course, their dense and woolly coat that does not shed, but is trimmed (in several ways and styles: Lion Clip, Modern Clip, English Saddle Clip). There are 2 types of hair – curly and twisted (something like dreadlocks, but this type of hair is much rarer). The coat can be of different colors: apricot, black, white, black, brown, but color should be uniform, without admixture of other colors.
The breed does not shed, but needs daily brushing (preferably with a metal brush) and a haircut every 6 weeks. The hair should be pulled out of his ears and ears should be cleaned regularly, because the breed is prone to ear infections. The coat is odorless, but the dog needs a bath once a month.
It is a lively dog, but does not require too long walks, all that is important that the walks are regular.
Poodle has a long lifetime, up to 15 years. They are of a social nature and they need human company.
Smaller poodle types, Toy and Miniature, should be given more attention because they are prone to jumping from furniture, and so they can hurt their feet.
Poodle is an ideal family pet due to its stable and friendly nature. Since they do not shed poodles are suitable for people who are allergic to dogs. This dog is adapted to live in an apartment, so it shouldn’t be kept outside on a chain. Proved to be a good watchdog – warns of the danger by barking. Poodle is kind with kids and other pets. However, if you have a miniature or toy poodle warn children to be gentle with the dog because they are very fragile so rough game could have unintended consequences for the dog. He needs the attention of people and company, therefore it must not be neglected because the poodle is very sensitive nature.
